A marketing QR code is not a GS1 Digital Link

The QR code that opens your website is not the code a checkout lane reads as the product.

They look alike. Checkout does not treat them alike.

A marketing QR code stores a web address you picked, usually a campaign page or the brand homepage. A phone opens it. A checkout scanner looking for the product number does not find one, because that number is not written in the GS1 pattern. The code can be perfectly printed and still be the wrong code for Sunrise 2027.

What the lane has to read

Sunrise 2027 is GS1's program for retail point-of-sale systems to scan a 2D barcode and get the same GTIN the linear barcode already carries. It is an industry program, not a statute. The GTIN can live inside a GS1 Digital Link: a web address with the product identifier in a standard place. The usual form puts the 14-digit GTIN after /01/. An imager at the register reads that number from the symbol. It does not have to load your website to ring the item up. A phone follows the address.

A code that only contains a campaign URL has nowhere for that number to sit. Making the URL shorter does not fix it.

A phone scan is not a retail test

Point a phone at the wrong code and a page still opens, so the art looks finished. The failure shows up later, when a lane or a retailer onboarding check looks for the GTIN in the GS1 syntax and does not find it. Test the symbol the way a checkout imager will read it, not only the way a shopper's camera will.

One printed code, a destination you can change

The useful version is a Digital Link on a domain your company will still control for as long as that package is in the market. The printed symbol stays. The page a phone opens can change: product details, support, or a notice about that lot. A campaign QR that points straight at a landing page has to be reprinted when the campaign ends, or it becomes a dead end on a pack that is still on the shelf.

Decide this before the file goes to the printer

  • The GTIN in the code is the same GTIN retailers already have for that sellable unit.
  • The domain in the code is one you will still own. A vendor subdomain you can lose is a bad place to print a permanent identity.
  • Someone on your team can change where a phone lands, without sending a new file to the printer.
  • The linear UPC stays on the pack until the lanes that sell it can read the 2D symbol. See how the two marks sit together.

Who this is for

Resolve2D is for brands that sell physical products and have a packaging calendar. We map the identifiers, design the Digital Link, and set the destinations a scan should open. We do not sell barcodes, and we do not replace your ERP. If the print date is the real constraint, start with the packaging timeline. The standard itself is on the GS1 Digital Link page.
