Who should own a brand's GS1 Digital Link

Packaging, product data, and the website all touch the code. Name an owner before art is released.

A GS1 Digital Link on a package is not a marketing asset and not an IT ticket. It is the product's identity, printed in a form a checkout lane can read and a phone can open. Three groups already touch it. If none of them owns it, the code that gets printed is whoever files art last.

Packaging owns what is physically possible

The print file decides whether a 2D barcode fits, whether the UPC stays, and whether the symbol has enough clear space to scan at the speed of a lane. Packaging also owns the date. Once a plate is made, the domain and the GTIN in that code are committed for the life of that inventory. See both marks on one pack and the timeline.

Product data owns the number

The GTIN in the link has to be the GTIN retailers already use for that sellable unit. A new code invented for the artwork, or a case GTIN put on an each, will not match the item the register expects. The people who maintain the item master are the ones who can say the number is right.

The website owns the destination

The phone has to land somewhere a customer can use, and that page has to be changeable after the print run. That is ordinary web work. It becomes a problem only when the URL in the art file is a campaign page nobody will maintain, or a vendor domain the brand does not control. The difference is covered in a marketing QR code versus a GS1 Digital Link.

Name one owner anyway

The three groups do not need to become one department. They do need one person who can get a decision before art is released: which SKUs, which domain, which page, which print cycle. That person is usually in packaging, brand operations, or the general management of a company that sells physical products. A team that only wants a barcode number, with nothing on a shelf, does not need this. GS1 is where a company prefix comes from. Resolve2D does not sell barcodes.

If you can put packaging, the item master, and the site on one plan, tell us about the products and the next print date. The work itself is the identifier map, the link design, and the destinations.
